What is the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score?

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) uses the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to compare profiles in the Express Entry pool.

 

The points-based system gives each candidate in the pool a CRS score based on their age, language skills, work experience, education, and ties to Canada, among other things.

 

About once every two weeks, the Canadian government holds an Express Entry draw and sends out Invitations to Apply (ITAs) to the people in the pool with the highest CRS scores.

How does the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) Score work? 

​

The points you receive from the CRS consist of a base set of up to 600 points and an additional set of up to 600 points. Your total score is out of 1,200 points . 

​

The CRS ranks eligible candidates for immigration to Canada through Express Entry under the following components:

• core human capital factors;

• accompanying spouse or common-law factors;

• skill transferability factors; and

• factors relating to a provincial nomination, a qualifying offer of arranged employment, Canadian study experience, a sibling in Canada, and/or French language ability.

 

Here's a breakdown of how points are allocated to an applicant in the Express Entry Pool.

Core/human capital + Spouse or common-law partner factors + Transferability factors + Additional points = Grand total – Maximum 1,200 points

Core / human capital factors

• With a spouse or common-law partner: Maximum 460 points total for all factors.

• Without a spouse or common-law partner: Maximum 500 points total for all factors.

 

Core/human capital factors include:

1. Age

2. Level of Education

3. Official Canadian Language Score

4. Canadian Work Experience

Spouse or common-law partner factors include:

1. Level of Education

2. Official Canadian Language Score

3. Canadian Work Experience

​

Skill Transferability Factors include:

1. Education

2. Foreign work experience

3. Certificate of qualification (for people in trade occupations)

The above constitute a maximum of 600 points.

In addition an application can be awarded an additional 600 points for: 

1. Siblings in Canada (who are related by blood) who  are either a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident.

2. French language skills

3. Post secondary education in Canada

4. Arranged employment (Valid job offer supported by an LMIA from Canadian employer)

5. Provincial nomination. A provincial nomination can earn an applicant 600 points flat out.

The above constitute a maximum of 600 points.
