Updated: Dec 14

Documents required for fingerprinting service

When attending a fingerprinting service appointment, ensuring you have the correct documents is essential to avoid delays or rescheduling. Here's a checklist of what you need to bring:

1. Two Valid Pieces of Identification (IDs)

You must provide two forms of government-issued identification. These IDs must be valid (not expired) and meet the criteria set by the service provider.

Examples of Acceptable Identifications for Fingerprinting Service:

The primary identification that may be accepted includes:

  • Driver’s License (issued by Canadian Province or Territory)

  • Foreign Driver’s License

  • Canadian Passport

  • Foreign Passport

  • Canadian Citizenship Card

  • Canadian Permanent Resident Card

  • Certification of Indian Status

  • Student Identity Card from foreign Institute

  • Firearms Possession Certificate

  • Firearms Acquisition Certificate

  • Record of Landing (CoPR)

  • Canadian National Institute of the Blind Identification Card

  • Federal / Provincial / Municipal Identification Card

  • Military Family Identification Card

  • Work or Study Permit issued to a Foreign National (Actual physical Document)

The Secondary Identification that may be accepted includes:

  • Birth Certificate

  • Baptismal Certificate

  • Hunting License

  • Fishing License

  • Marriage License

  • Hospital Card

  • Immigration Papers

  • Union Membership Card

  • Private Industry Employee Identification Cards

NOTE:

As per RCMP requirements:

  • SIN Card, Health Card and Credit Card are NOT acceptable.

  • ONLY original IDs or certified copies (as secondary ID only) are accepted. One of the two IDs has to have the applicant’s photo and signature on it.

2. Request Letter, Email, or Instructions

If the fingerprinting is being conducted for a specific purpose, such as an RCMP background check, visa application, or employment screening, you will need to bring:

  • The request letter or email from the requesting organization.

  • Any reference numbers or instructions provided by the organization.

Examples Include:

  • A letter from your employer requesting a background check for employment.

  • Instructions from IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) for immigration or citizenship applications.

  • Documents from a foreign embassy for visa or immigration processing.

Additional Recommendations

  • Payment: Check if the service provider requires payment upfront. Bring the correct amount or a payment method accepted by the provider.

  • Glasses or Contact Lenses: If your service includes a photo capture, ensure you can remove any reflective glasses to avoid interference with the photograph.

  • Hygiene: Clean hands and fingers are recommended to ensure clear fingerprint scans. Avoid lotions or oils that might affect the scanning process.
